Auditory Learning and Educational Toys

Auditory Learners learn at their best through hearing. Explaining something to them verbally will usually help them understand more accurately. When selecting toys for your child that you know is more of an auditory learner, it will likely help to select more educational toys that are designed for this learning style. Many manufacturers will list a toy as being more of one style then the other. Toys that are designed more for the other styles should still be purchased in order to develop the other styles of learning.

Many times it is difficult to understand whether your child has more of an auditory learning style or not. There are ways to find out if this style is inherent within your child by looking at his/her characteristics. The following might give a good indication of a child with strong auditory processing skills:

  1. An enjoyment for words and strong vocabulary
  2. An ability to recollect information details accurately through conversations (and/or lectures).
  3. Strong oral communication skills will come from a very good language aptitude. A child of this sort can articulate his/her ideas clearly and hold interesting conversations. From my experience, the average girl is more likely to have this ability than the average boy.
  4. A talent in music may often come from one who is an auditory learner. Having this learning style enables a child to better hear tones, individual notes and rhythms.

Distinct behaviors of this learning type may include:

  1. Will speak the language easier than others
  2. Likes music very much
  3. Sometimes talks to self
  4. May be distracted easily
  5. Lips move when reading longer after beginning to read then others
  6. May speak in a rhythmic sequence
  7. Learns more my listening and talking
  8. Learns by a procedure sequence or defined steps
  9. More easily verbally repeats back
