Computers as an Educational Toy

Computers used in the right way can be a very fun learning tool. They offer the user an ability to teach oneself, type a paper, send email, and many other different tasks. Another important task can help perform is educating your child. There are some software packages that will help in this regard.

However, does your child need to use a computer? At what age might be best for a child to start using a computer? What will a computer offer that other means cannot? Frankly a child really doesn't need to use a computer till later in his/her young years, but it will generally depend on the child. However, many children under 5 can easily use a computer since it just involves pressing buttons.

It really comes down to the parents' choice. They may choose to start their child out on an interactive educational toy or game like a LeapFrog pad before moving him up to the level of a computer. They may also find some good educational software that supports their child's school learning and decide to buy it as a supplement to other current learning activities. Or the child's school may start teaching the students to use a computer and then the parent(s) may then decide that a computer at home may help add to learning. A parent's role is to help their child develop, grow and learn. In this technological age, these tasks include deciding when and if to buy a computer for a child and family's use.

In many cases, a family may already have a computer. For this scenario, the parent will probably have a fairly good understanding of when their child should start using a computer. Most children will acclimate themselves very easily to using a computer so holding off a child's beginning use of the computer will likely not present a problem.

Another job for you as the parent is to monitor your child's computer use. Many times it inevitably can become just an expensive toy that can waste your child's time. You will have to regulate how long games are played (educational or not) so that your child has the benefit of developing in other areas of learning and play. A computer can good used in the right way, but also can be a black hole for your child's time.
