Visual Learning Style and Educational Toys
The ones that learn better by seeing information are visual learners. They will sort out information by manipulating and creating mental images of ideas or objects to understand things better. When your child is more of a visual learner, you will likely help him/her learn easier and faster by selecting educational toys that are designed for this visual learning style. Many manufacturers will often inform the consumer of toys that are more of one learning style than another. Although purchasing toys designed for this learning style is good, toys of other styles should still be purchased in order to develop the other styles of learning.
It is often difficult to see whether your child learning style falls more into being visually based or not. You can find out if this style resides within your child by looking at his/her characteristics. The following items should give a good indication of a child with strong visual processing skills:
- This type may create detailed "movies inside their minds eye" about information they are reading.
- This learning type can deal easily with textures, angles, sizes, shapes and 3-dimensional figures because of their very good visual-spatial skills.
- Picture, diagram and chart information will easily be remembered.
- The strong visual skills of a visual learner will allow them to "see" in their mind's eye information drawn or written. While doing this their eyes may look upwards to the left.
- Visual learners will have a clear awareness of art, visual media, and the physical beauty of their surroundings.
Distinct behaviors of this type of learning may include:
- An aptitude for organizing the items on a shelf, in a room or in their bedroom.
- Thinks about their appearance more
- Mind might wonder more when there is too much verbal stimuli
- Is not as distracted by noise
- Will rather read to oneself than be read to
- Will likely spell very well
- Will notice when you change clothes, change your hair, or put on makeup
- Will have some trouble remembering verbal instruction
